Rashford, Torres fire Barcelona to La Liga glory as Real Madrid’s trophy drought deepens

Barcelona clinched their 29th La Liga title and second in succession with a commanding 2-0 victory over Real Madrid in a sun-soaked El Clásico at Camp Nou on Sunday, leaving their fierce rivals staring down the barrel of a second consecutive trophyless season.

Marcus Rashford, on loan from Manchester United, opened the scoring with a stunning free-kick into the top-left corner before Ferran Torres doubled the advantage inside 18 minutes, effectively ending the contest — and the title race — before the half-hour mark.

The result moved Hansi Flick’s side an unassailable 14 points clear of second-placed Madrid with three games remaining, marking only the second time in history that a Clásico result has directly decided the La Liga title.Madrid arrived at the fixture in disarray.

Midfielder Fede Valverde was ruled out following a training ground altercation with teammate Aurélien Tchouaméni, while superstar Kylian Mbappé also missed out through injury, leaving Gonzalo García to lead the line. The Frenchman threatened briefly, prodding narrowly wide after exploiting Barça’s high defensive line, but Madrid rarely troubled the hosts in any meaningful way.

Jude Bellingham thought he had pulled one back, only to be denied by the offside flag, as the Camp Nou faithful — 62,000 strong in the stadium’s first Clásico since its grand reopening — turned the second half into a full-blown celebration, batting inflatable beach balls around the stands in a pointed taunt at Vinícius Júnior over his Ballon d’Or ambitions.

Rashford nearly added a third before the break, while Torres and second-half substitutes Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski were all denied by a busy Thibaut Courtois as Barça settled for a clean sheet.

Flick’s men now sit firmly on course to match the all-time record of 100 league points, needing only victory over Real Betis at home to remain unbeaten in all Camp Nou fixtures this season.

For Madrid, the questions are already mounting. Coach Álvaro Arbeloa, widely expected to depart at season’s end, cut a helpless figure on the touchline, while reports linking former boss José Mourinho with a sensational return add further turbulence to a club in urgent need of reinvention.
