Jannik Sinner successfully defended his Wimbledon title on Sunday, outlasting French Open champion Alexander Zverev 6-7 (7/9), 7-6 (7/2), 6-3, 6-4 in a physically demanding final on Centre Court.
The world number one recovered after dropping the opening set, gradually wearing down Zverev to claim his fifth Grand Slam title and his second consecutive Wimbledon crown. The victory also marked his 100th career match win at majors.
Sinner saved the only break point he faced throughout the match, finishing with 58 winners to just 25 unforced errors across three hours and 46 minutes. He described the occasion as one that never loses its significance, saying he takes nothing for granted despite his growing dominance on grass.
The win moves Sinner to five Grand Slam titles, two behind injured rival Carlos Alcaraz, and earns him a winner’s cheque of £3.6 million ($4.8 million). It also caps a strong bounce-back from his shock second-round exit at the French Open last month, where he surrendered a two-set lead to Juan Manuel Cerundolo.
Sinner’s only real scare at this year’s Championships came in the first round, when he needed five sets to see off Miomir Kecmanovic. From there, he cruised through the draw untroubled.
