President Bola Tinubu has fired off a fresh bill to the House of Representatives, pushing hard for state governors to finally get their own police forces.
The bill, addressed to Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, aims to rewrite the 1999 Constitution and open the door for state police to work side-by-side with the federal force.
Tinubu didn’t hide his excitement, saying he was “delighted” to put the bill forward, and promised it comes packed with extra safeguards to get the new dual-policing system running fast.
He didn’t mince words either, telling lawmakers the plan is central to his security shake-up and he expects the House to move quickly.
The push lands just two weeks after the Senate rubber-stamped its own version, clearing the two-thirds majority needed for a constitutional change. Now all eyes turn to the House to see if state police finally becomes reality.
