EFCC officer accused of extortion, unexplained wealth in new petition

A senior officer of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), holding the rank of Assistant Commander (ACE), has been accused of abuse of office, extortion, obstruction of justice, interference with investigations, and acquisition of unexplained wealth.

The allegations are contained in a six-page petition submitted to EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede on July 9, 2026, by the Network for Justice Association of Nigeria (NJAN). A copy of the petition was obtained by PRNigeria.

The petition arrives amid heightened scrutiny of alleged misconduct within the agency, including a separate probe into a sectional head over an alleged $400,000 corruption matter. Olukoyede has repeatedly called for internal cleansing to preserve the EFCC’s credibility, and the Commission has dismissed personnel found culpable of fraud and misconduct in the past.

NJAN alleged that the officer, described as close to the EFCC leadership, used his influence to interfere with official processes. The group also questioned his lifestyle relative to his reported monthly pay of between N800,000 and N900,000.

The association warned that unaddressed, the allegations could weaken public trust in anti-corruption enforcement and demoralise officers who work professionally. It called on Olukoyede to order an independent investigation, secure documentary and electronic evidence, protect potential witnesses, and act if wrongdoing is confirmed.

EFCC spokesman Dele Oyewale said the Commission maintains a zero-tolerance policy on internal corruption, noting that more than 40 staff had recently been dismissed after independent investigations. He said disciplinary reviews are ongoing but that he was not yet aware of the specific petition.
