The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned of possible flash flooding in Lagos and other coastal states as widespread rainfall continues across southern Nigeria.
The warning was contained in NiMet’s Tuesday Weather Outlook for June 30, 2026, which forecast sustained rainfall across the southern region throughout the day.The agency said continuous rainfall could trigger flash flooding in coastal and low-lying communities, particularly in Lagos and other states along the country’s southern coastline.
NiMet forecast thunderstorms with light rainfall over Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Lagos, Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom states in the morning, intensifying to moderate rainfall across the entire southern region by afternoon and evening, with high flood risk in Ogun, Ondo, Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.
In the north, the agency predicted morning thunderstorms with moderate rainfall over Borno, Adamawa, and Taraba, later extending to Bauchi, Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, Zamfara, Kaduna, Sokoto, Yobe, Gombe, and Kebbi states.For the North Central region, NiMet forecast cloudy mornings with chances of thunderstorms over the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, and Benue, intensifying to moderate rainfall in the afternoon and evening.
The agency urged residents to monitor weather conditions, avoid driving or walking through floodwaters, and steer clear of tall trees during thunderstorms due to lightning risk. Motorists were also advised to drive cautiously during rainfall and poor visibility, while airline operators were urged to obtain airport-specific weather reports for safe flight operations
