President Donald Trump has warned Iran that the US military stands ready to “completely decimate and destroy all areas” of the Islamic Republic if its leaders attempted or carried out his assassination. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said 1,000 missiles were “locked and loaded” and aimed at Iran, with thousands more to follow, should the Iranian government act on threats to assassinate the sitting US president.
He added that orders had already been given for the military to carry out the strikes over a one-year period, subject to extension. The warning comes at the end of a week in which clashes between Iran and the US appeared to undermine a tentative accord between the two countries, and follows the funeral of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei (Union-Bulletin) , who was killed earlier this year in a joint US-Israeli strike. Israel had shared intelligence with the US this week about a new and specific Iranian plot to assassinate Trump, according to US media reports.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi hit back, insisting Tehran had kept its word while accusing the US Treasury Secretary of violating the countries’ memorandum of understanding.
