Tanzania VP Nchimbi steps down citing desire for political change

Tanzanian Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi has officially tendered his resignation and declared his retirement from active politics, explaining that he believes President Samia Suluhu Hassan wants a new running mate. His resignation will officially take effect on September 4.

Nchimbi revealed his decision on Tuesday, August 25, stating that he sent a formal letter to Hassan detailing his exit from both the vice presidency and public life. He noted that he had previously pledged to the president in August 2025 that he would step aside whenever she preferred a different deputy. Nchimbi stated he is now convinced beyond doubt that Hassan seeks a change in leadership.

This political shift follows recent media friction in the country. Just days prior to Nchimbi’s statement, government officials suspended the publishing license of the MwanaHALISI newspaper for six months. The outlet had published reports alleging internal friction between the two leaders and claiming Nchimbi was defying pressure to step down. Authorities cited violations of professional standards regarding accuracy, balance, and verification for the suspension.

The timing of both events has intensified focus on the country’s political climate. Hassan won the presidency in a landslide during the previous election with 98 percent of the vote, though international observers raised concerns over the election process, which was marked by fatal unrest.

While Hassan initially received praise for easing political and media restrictions upon taking office in 2021, critics and opposition figures argue her administration is shifting back toward the restrictive measures seen under former President John Magufuli. Tanzania currently holds the 117th spot out of 180 countries on the Reporters Without Borders press freedom index.

Nchimbi’s departure after less than a year in office leaves Hassan tasked with appointing a replacement during a pivotal time for the nation’s political future.
