Former Political Adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan and APC Chieftain, Prof. Rufa’i Ahmed Alkali, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Comrade Patrick Osertin Osambedwan, the former Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council.
Reflecting on the loss, Prof. Alkali stated: ”I received with profound shock and sadness the news of the passing of Comrade Patrick Osertin Osambedwan, former Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council.
His death is a painful loss not only to the journalism profession but also to our nation, which benefited immensely from his commitment to truth, accountability and public service. Patrick was a consummate media professional and a dependable personality, whose contributions to the growth of journalism and democratic governance will remain indelible in our national memory.”
Prof. Alkali highlighted his long-standing personal and professional connection with the deceased, describing him as a close friend and a courageous professional whose commitment to ethics earned him widespread respect across public service and the media. He noted that Comrade Osambedwan viewed journalism as a sacred calling focused on public enlightenment and national development.
Beyond honoring the late union leader’s legacy in press freedom and media welfare, Prof. Alkali raised concerns regarding the rising mortality rate among media practitioners in the nation’s capital and across Nigeria.
”His passing has also compelled me to reflect on the disturbing and increasing loss of journalists within the FCT and across the country.
It is particularly troubling that we have continued to witness the demise of many media professionals within a relatively short period. The media family in the FCT has suffered painful losses in recent years, and each death represents the departure of a repository of knowledge, experience, and wisdom,” he said.
He urged stakeholders to treat this alarming trend as an urgent call to prioritize the health, welfare, and support systems for media personnel who sacrifice much in service to the public.
Concluding his tribute, Prof. Alkali extended his condolences to Osambedwan’s family, the NUJ FCT Council, and the wider media community, offering prayers for the repose of his soul and for fortitude for those left behind.
