The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported 14 new confirmed Lassa fever cases in epidemiological week 33, bringing cumulative infections nationwide to 1,035.
According to a situation report released in Abuja on Tuesday, the latest cases were recorded between August 10 and August 16 in Ondo, Bauchi, Edo and Benue states.
The agency said cumulative deaths have risen to 252, pushing the case fatality rate to 24.4 per cent — higher than the 18.6 per cent recorded during the same period in 2025.
It noted that the 14 new cases marked an increase from the four cases reported in week 32, which were recorded in Ondo and Edo states. By week 32, cumulative infections stood at 1,021, with 240 deaths and a case fatality rate of 23.5 per cent.
The NCDC said the week 32 figure had itself represented a decline from the 17 confirmed cases recorded in week 31, reflecting ongoing fluctuations in weekly transmission patterns.
As of week 33, the agency said 23 states had reported at least one confirmed Lassa fever case, spread across 117 local government areas nationwide.
The NCDC said it would continue surveillance and response activities across affected states, noting that Lassa fever remains a significant public health concern in the country.
