Police and protesters clashed violently in Paris and other French cities on Saturday on the sidelines of nationwide marches against soaring inflation.
One demonstrator’s hand was blown off, several fires were set, and looters broke into dozens of stores and stripped them bare.
The unrest follows weeks of student protests and deepens political uncertainty in France, which holds elections in six months to replace President Emmanuel Macron.
Many demonstrators criticised Macron and his government. The CGT union said 500,000 people took part across the country. Authorities did not immediately give their own estimate.
