Rising cost of living sparks Dakar demonstrations as Senegalese trade unions prepare three-day strike

A crowd of approximately 150 demonstrators gathered in Dakar following a call from trade union federations, demanding that government authorities honor past agreements and alleviate the growing financial burdens placed on workers.

The protest highlights widespread frustration across the country regarding mounting living costs and weakening purchasing power. It serves as a precursor to a planned 72-hour general strike scheduled to commence on Wednesday.

Sara Konaré, secretary general of Senegal’s National Union of Petroleum and Gas Workers, pointed out that the level of participation demonstrates increasing solidarity among labor organizations. Konaré also criticized government officials for their continued failure to negotiate directly with labor representatives.

The upcoming industrial action could lead to severe consequences across vital sectors, particularly healthcare. Ndeye Seck Fall, director of a local dialysis centre, expressed deep concern that the strike might severely interrupt crucial medical services, leaving vulnerable patients with few care alternatives. Fall emphasized that a complete halt in public health operations would force many citizens toward private medical facilities that they simply cannot afford.

These labor disruptions come at a sensitive time for Senegal, which is currently making preparations to host the Youth Olympic Games. The upcoming international event intensifies pressure on officials to resolve union grievances as trade leaders warn of continued actions if their demands remain unaddressed.
