Amnesty International has strongly condemned the killing of Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, a social media political commentator, whose body was discovered in a pool of blood at his residence in Kano State.
The incident occurred in Gaida, Kumbotso Local Government Area of the state. Dan Shagamu had reportedly been unreachable for two days before neighbours discovered his body.
In a statement issued Wednesday, Amnesty International said the commentator was killed after being overpowered by his attackers. Dan Shagamu, who operated under the name Dan-Shagamu International, was known for his commentary on political, religious and community issues, and had previously criticised both the Kano State and Federal governments.
The rights group urged Nigerian authorities to launch a thorough investigation and ensure that suspects are brought to justice, stating that in a democracy, critics should be listened to rather than silenced.
Amnesty International also raised concerns over what it described as the government’s inadequate response to rising political violence — including killings, threats and intimidation — ahead of the 2027 general election, noting that disturbing reports of politically motivated threats continue to emerge as the polls draw nearer.
It was gathered that Dan Shagamu had previously flagged threats to his life from individuals within his neighbourhood. The Kano State Police Command is yet to confirm his death.
