A severe cholera outbreak has claimed at least 27 lives in Borno State, with 2,715 suspected cases detected during the first 24 days of May 2026.

An official epidemiological summary obtained by reporters highlights that the disease has spread across multiple local government areas, including Jere, Mafa, Konduga, Monguno, Ngala, and Magumeri.

The data reveals varying infection rates across the state:

Jere: 834 suspected cases

Mafa: 159 suspected cases

Konduga: 95 suspected cases

Monguno: 56 suspected cases

Ngala: 2 suspected cases

Magumeri: 1 suspected case
The Maiduguri Metropolitan Council has emerged as the epicentre of the crisis, registering 1,568 suspected infections, more than half of the state’s total caseload.

The epidemiological report characterizes the outbreak as a rapidly growing emergency, with hundreds of new cases surfacing daily.

However, medical experts warn that the actual tally of ,2715 cases is likely an underestimate, as data from several Cholera Treatment Centres (CTCs) and Oral Rehydration Points (ORPs) has not yet been fully integrated.

The disease has penetrated 124 communities across 29 wards, sparking intense fears of broader transmission unless containment efforts are aggressively scaled up.
Of the 27 recorded fatalities, 16 occurred within medical facilities, while 11 took place directly inside communities. The community deaths have triggered alarms regarding limited healthcare access and slow emergency interventions.

Call for Action and Government Response
With the Case Fatality Rate hitting one percent, the situation has reached the World Health Organization’s emergency threshold, signaling a critical need for immediate intervention.

Non-governmental health workers have raised concerns over the state government’s delayed response in declaring a public health emergency and initiating widespread public sensitization campaigns.

When reached for a statement regarding the findings, Dr Goni Imam Ali, the Director of Public Health at the Borno State Ministry of Health, stated:
“the epidemiological report did not originate from the ministry”

Dr. Ali declined to comment further on the ongoing health crisis.
