‎
Security operatives in Cross River State have apprehended a suspected serial killer identified as Akaninyene. The arrest followed an investigation linking him to the disappearance and tragic murder of a recent victim.
‎
‎
‎The suspect was captured in Abanyama, Ukim Ita Community within Creektown, Odukpani Local Government Area. The operation was driven by intelligence gathered by the Nigerian Army alongside a tactical special forces squad. Backed by community youths and local elders, the operatives tracked Akaninyene to an isolated hut he had reportedly constructed deep inside a forest.
‎
‎
‎Upon spotting the incoming security team, the suspect allegedly dashed into his hut to grab a weapon before attempting to escape into the dense woods, but the tactical squad successfully caught him.
‎
‎
‎A thorough search of the remote hideout uncovered eight shallow graves, each reportedly containing multiple decapitated bodies. Plantain crops had been deliberately cultivated over the burial sites in what investigators believe was a calculated effort to hide the graves. Authorities suspect the gruesome killings had been occurring over a prolonged period.
‎
‎
‎During his interrogation, Akaninyene allegedly confessed to murdering approximately 30 individuals, many of whom corresponded with local residents previously reported missing. Security forces subsequently directed him to lead them to the exact burial sites, where decomposing remains were exhumed.
‎
‎The suspect also reportedly stated that his most recent murder occurred on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. He further claimed that a female accomplice was involved in luring the victims and helping him carry out the fatal attacks.
‎
‎
‎The breakthrough in the case came after local residents grew alarmed by cries and signs of a struggle connected to the final victim. This prompted community leaders to report the disturbing pattern of missing persons to local authorities.
‎
‎
‎The issue was formally brought to the Executive Chairman of Odukpani Local Government Area, Rt. Hon. Elder Chief Ukpong Etim Asido, following complaints raised by Apostle Hon. Ene Itam, the councillor representing Creektown Ward 1, alongside various ward leaders, youths, and elders. This coordination triggered the joint security operation.
‎
‎
‎The horrific discovery has sent shockwaves through the area, leaving residents stunned that the alleged killer had managed to live unnoticed among them. In response, local youths have escalated bush-combing efforts in the surrounding forests to ensure no other hideouts or evidence remain hidden.
‎Law enforcement authorities stated that investigations are still active, noting that the suspect’s confessions could help unmask and arrest remaining members of the suspected criminal ring.
‎
‎Confirming the incident, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, the spokesperson for the Cross River State Police Command, stated that an official statement regarding the case would be released in due course.
