King Charles Breaks Tradition: Buckingham Palace to publish Monarch’s private tax bill

In a major push for transparency amidst mounting public interest in royal wealth, King Charles III is set to make his personal tax details public, Buckingham Palace confirmed to British media on Saturday.

While British sovereigns are legally exempt from several forms of taxation, they have chosen to pay certain duties voluntarily for several decades. Furthermore, there is no legal requirement for the monarch to publish these financial records.

However, a series of controversies involving the King’s brother, Prince Andrew, have recently amplified public focus on the institution’s financial dealings.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson informed the Press Association that Charles will make history as the first reigning monarch to intentionally release his personal tax figures.

“The decision to do so as Sovereign has come at the express wish of the King himself, as part of the adaptations carried across since accession,” the spokesperson stated.

“Our aim is to explain all elements of royal finances in a way that further enhances clarity and accessibility, while also placing it in its historical and constitutional context. To put it simply: we continue to modernise and evolve.”

According to a BBC report, the public will get a look at the King’s tax data on Thursday when it is published alongside the yearly royal financial accounts.

By law, British monarchs are completely exempt from income tax, capital gains tax, and inheritance tax. Despite this, a system of voluntary compliance was established in 1993 under the late Queen Elizabeth II, who began paying income and capital gains taxes out of pocket. King Charles also routinely disclosed his tax contributions during his tenure as the Prince of Wales prior to taking the throne in 2022.

The move toward greater transparency follows a period of reputational damage for the royal family, stemming from Prince Andrew’s association with convicted US sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Earlier this month, government auditors disclosed that Andrew had been generating a private income by subletting cottages while paying a negligible “peppercorn rent” for his own mansion for over twenty years.

The official operations of the royal family are funded by the British Treasury through an annual allocation called the Sovereign Grant.

Separate from public funding, the King’s private revenues are generated by the Duchy of Lancaster, a centuries-old portfolio encompassing real estate, land, and various investments. Financial records show that the Duchy of Lancaster generated an annual income of 26.8 million pounds ($35.6 million) for the King during the 2024-25 fiscal year.
