Lagos streets ignite as Democracy Day met with dual protests over hardship, reform

Activists, civil society organizations, and frustrated citizens flooded the streets of Lagos on Friday, utilizing Democracy Day to launch a renewed #EndBadGovernance demonstration.

The crowd gathered to demand swift government intervention regarding the nation’s escalating economic distress, widespread joblessness, insecurity, and the soaring cost of living.

Despite the heavy presence of security personnel, the procession remained peaceful.

Demonstrators marched through the city hoisting placards with stark messages including, “Free All Captives Now,” “End Anti-People Policies Now,” and “For a Living Wage and Mass Creation of Employment.”

The resurgence of public anger follows on the heels of recent back-to-back mass kidnappings in Oyo and Borno states, alongside the daily financial struggles of ordinary Nigerians who are grappling with high inflation, exorbitant transportation costs, and a sharp decline in purchasing power.

Prominent figures joined the frontlines to amplify these demands. Renowned human rights attorney and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, stood with the crowds after previously partnering with civil society groups to declare June 12 a day of national mobilization against hunger and insecurity.

Adding star power to the movement, popular rapper and songwriter Folarin Falana, better known as Falz, also marched with the demonstrators, focusing his appeal on urging the government to safeguard schools nationwide.
The Counter-Protest
The day’s demonstrations were not entirely one-sided.

The protest grounds also saw the arrival of a separate faction of demonstrators who turned out to show their solidarity with the federal government’s current policy and economic adjustments.
Parading with banners that read, “Better Days Ahead for Nigeria,” this pro-government faction advocated for national patience.

They argued that the administration’s controversial reforms are necessary stepping stones to guide the country toward long-term economic stability and sustainable development.
