OpenAI is preparing to publicly launch its new GPT-5.6 model series this Thursday, following a period of restricted access tied to US national security concerns. The rollout comes shortly after Anthropic began restoring access to its own advanced models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, after Washington lifted export restrictions on their release.
GPT-5.6 will launch in three tiers: Sol, the flagship model; Terra, a mid-range option for everyday tasks; and Luna, a faster, lower-cost version. OpenAI confirmed the public launch and expanded global preview access in a post on X, though it offered no further details.
The new generation of AI models, including OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 and Anthropic’s Mythos series, has drawn scrutiny over their advanced ability to detect software vulnerabilities that could be exploited by hackers. Citing these concerns, OpenAI said in late June it had given preview access to GPT-5.6 to a limited group of trusted US-based partners at the request of the federal government.
Axios reported, citing a source familiar with the matter, that the Trump administration cleared OpenAI for a broad launch of GPT-5.6 following technical testing and discussions with government officials. AFP has sought comment from OpenAI, the White House, and the US Department of Commerce.The developments mark a shift from the administration’s earlier stance favoring fewer regulations on AI firms in order to maintain a competitive edge over China.
