Russia resumed drone strikes on Kyiv early Tuesday, hours after a three-day pause in attacks on the Ukrainian capital expired, Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said.
The service reported on Telegram that Russian forces struck the Boryspil and Fastiv districts with drones. The Kyiv city military administration declared an air raid alert over the threat of drone attacks and urged residents to take shelter.
Russian President Vladimir Putin had ordered the halt in strikes on Kyiv over the weekend, coinciding with visits to Moscow and Kyiv by US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Russia’s state news agency TASS confirmed earlier Monday that the pause had expired.
AFP journalists reported a series of strong explosions in Kyiv early Tuesday, which set off car alarms in the city centre. Officials said buildings were hit in Kyiv as well as in the Boryspil and Fastiv districts, and an AFP journalist saw smoke and fire in the aftermath.
Witkoff said the talks with Ukrainian and Russian officials had made progress, raising the possibility of reviving three-way peace negotiations to end the war.
