Sudan has filed complaints with the UN Security Council and the African Union’s Peace and Security Council, alleging that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are launching drone attacks on civilian sites, including power stations, from Ethiopian territory. The RSF has been at war with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) since April 2023.
A report by Sudan’s Foreign Ministry and military intelligence says 187 one-way attack drones were launched in 70 separate assaults from Ethiopia between February and October. October alone saw 28 attacks involving 97 drones, which suggests the frequency is rising.
More than 90 percent of power stations in Sudanese cities are now out of service because of the strikes.
Sudanese border affairs specialist Abdul Kareem Al-Almin Ahmed told Al Jazeera that the drones’ long range and destructive power point to significant external backing. He said the accusations between the two sides are “many and almost daily,” and that some voices within the SAF and allied forces are demanding that Sudan declare war on Ethiopia.
Ethiopia’s alleged support for the RSF has also split the SAF over how to respond.
