September 2026 | Vilakazi Street, SowetoSOWETO, SOUTH AFRICA 🇿🇦 What happens when fashion steps off the runway and into the space of cultural diplomacy?

On 26 September, Vilakazi Street in Soweto became a living stage for African unity as South African and Nigerian creatives, leaders, students, entrepreneurs and cultural voices gathered for THREADS OF UNITY | VUKANI FASHION AWARDS 2026.

Endorsed by the Women African Tourism Board (WATB) and supported by Southgerian Lifestyle Magazine, the programme brought together fashion, heritage, storytelling and dialogue under a powerful message:

FROM SOWETO TO LAGOS.

Hosted in partnership with the City of Johannesburg, the event placed the relationship between South Africa and Nigeria firmly within the cultural and creative economy conversation.

A RUNWAY THAT CONNECTED TWO NATIONSThe fashion showcase provided one of the day’s clearest expressions of African connection.

Among the Nigerian talent featured was award-winning South Africa-based Nigerian designer Semmy-Mania, whose work brought Nigerian creativity into the heart of Soweto.

The runway also featured Mustafa, popularly known as @mustygreatmodel, a South Africa-based Nigerian model who proudly brought his Yoruba heritage to the showcase.

Their participation demonstrated how fashion can become a language of connection:

A Nigerian designer creating in South Africa.

A Nigerian model carrying Yoruba identity onto a South African runway.

A South African pan-African publication amplifying Nigerian creativity.

For Southgerian Lifestyle, the moment was particularly symbolic.

The publication was represented on the runway in a Nigerian-designed Semmy-Mania creation, a visual expression of the magazine’s longstanding commitment to African creativity without borders.

This was fashion. But it was also people-to-people diplomacy.

WATB TAKES CULTURAL DIPLOMACY TO THE HEART OF SOWETO

At the centre of Threads of Unity was the WATB Cultural Diplomacy Panel, held under the theme:“Winnie Madikizela-Mandela: From Liberation Heritage to Global Cultural Diplomacy.”

Hosted and chaired by Ambassador Moleboheng Matli, MBL, President and Executive Chairperson of WATB and President & Editor-in-Chief of Southgerian Lifestyle Magazine, the panel brought together voices from academia, leadership, culture, media and African youth.

The speakers were:Dr Danisa E. BaloyiDr Malusi Mncube, University of JohannesburgSlauzy Zodwa MogamiỌmọbọ́lánlé Kayode James, President of NANSSASizakele MtimkuluThe conversation explored Mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s legacy through heritage, African agency, women’s leadership, cultural diplomacy and people-to-people relations.

Held in Soweto, the conversation carried particular weight.

Rather than simply looking backwards, the panel asked what liberation heritage means for Africa today and what responsibility today’s generation carries in building stronger continental relationships.

NIGERIAN YOUTH AT THE TABLE

The Nigerian contribution extended beyond the runway.

NANSSA President Ọmọbọ́lánlé Kayode James led a delegation that included members of the Congress of Nigerian Students at the University of Johannesburg, with its President, Babatunde Okediji, also present.

Their participation brought a vital youth dimension to the conversation.

Established leaders, academics, creatives and young Nigerians studying in South Africa shared the same space.

Because Africa’s future relationships cannot be built by one generation alone.

Young Africans must be in the room.

WHEN CULTURAL DIPLOMACY MEETS THE REALITY OF MOBILITYThreads of Unity also exposed one of the challenges facing Africa’s growing creative and cultural economy.

Some Nigerian designers expected to participate were unable to attend because of visa and immigration-related challenges.

Their absence highlighted an important question: if cultural diplomacy is about bringing people together, how do we make legitimate movement across Africa more accessible and predictable?

The conversation is bigger than fashion. It affects creatives, entrepreneurs, students, academics, tourism professionals and cultural practitioners.

As Africa advances the ambitions of Agenda 2063 and the African Continental Free Trade Area, integration must be understood not only through goods and capital, but through the movement of people, ideas, culture, talent and opportunity.

SONWABILE NDAMASE HONOURED FOR A LEGACY OF AFRICAN CREATIVITY

One of the defining moments of the evening was the presentation of the WATB Cultural Diplomacy Legacy Award to acclaimed South African designer Sonwabile Ndamase. The award was presented by Ambassador Moleboheng Matli in her capacity as President and Executive Chairperson of WATB.

The honour recognised Ndamase’s contribution to African design, craftsmanship and cultural identity, and his role in carrying African creativity into wider global spaces. It was more than a fashion award. It was a recognition of heritage carried through creativity.

For WATB, the recognition also reinforced the importance of celebrating African cultural ambassadors and documenting the creative legacies that continue to shape the continent’s global identity.

THE THREADS CONTINUEThreads of Unity 2026 left Soweto with a message that extended far beyond the runway.

South Africa and Nigeria shared a creative platform.

Nigerian designers and models brought their talent and heritage to South Africa.Young Nigerian students joined a continental conversation.WATB brought cultural diplomacy into a heritage-rich public space.

Southgerian Lifestyle amplified the stories.

And Sonwabile Ndamase was honoured for a legacy that has helped carry African creativity across borders.

For the Women African Tourism Board, the programme reflected its broader continental mandate across:TRAVEL | TRADE | TRAIN | TRANSACTFor Southgerian Lifestyle, it reinforced our commitment to Uniting Africa’s Pride through media, culture, heritage and storytelling.

From Soweto to Lagos. From fashion to tourism.

From heritage to enterprise.

From memory to the next generation. Two nations. Many cultures. Countless threads. One continent.

The Threads of Unity continue.
