United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged the international community to establish a global governance framework for artificial intelligence, cautioning that the technology’s rapid evolution is outpacing the world’s ability to regulate it.
Addressing attendees at the UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance held in Geneva, Guterres emphasized that artificial intelligence needs to serve human interests, rather than being permitted to dictate the future of society without transparent guidelines and responsibility.
The UN chief noted that artificial intelligence is reshaping economic structures, employment landscapes, democratic elections, and international safety at a speed that is leaving state governments and global bodies struggling to keep up. Because of this, he stressed that enhanced global collaboration is vital to make sure the technology remains secure, equitable, and aligned with human rights.
Beyond societal impacts, Guterres highlighted the escalating ecological footprint of artificial intelligence. He pushed tech corporations to be transparent about the massive power consumption of their networks and to pledge that their data centers will run entirely on renewable energy sources by the year 2030.
His most severe warnings were directed at the integration of artificial intelligence into warfare.
Guterres advocated for an outright prohibition on autonomous lethal weapons that can choose and engage targets without direct human oversight. He maintained that life-or-death determinations must never be handed over to automated software.
Guterres concluded by stating that the global community has only a brief opportunity to put functional safeguards in place.
He warned that the choices made today will ultimately decide if artificial intelligence acts as an engine for human advancement or as a catalyst for heightened dangers for the generations to come.
