US President Donald Trump will attend the FIFA World Cup final in New Jersey on July 19 and jointly present the trophy to the winning team, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed.
Speaking to Fox and Friends, Infantino said he and Trump would watch the final together before handing over the trophy as a pair. The arrangement comes after last year’s Club World Cup final sparked controversy when Trump presented the trophy to Chelsea captain Reece James but remained on stage afterward, inadvertently joining the team’s celebrations as players looked on with visible confusion.
Infantino has built a notably close relationship with Trump, having created a new FIFA peace prize specifically to honor him at the World Cup draw held in Washington last year.
