Sir Alex Ferguson was taken to hospital from Old Trafford on Sunday after falling ill ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League fixture against Liverpool.
The 83-year-old departed the stadium over an hour before kick-off, with sources confirming the hospitalisation was a precautionary measure and that he is expected to return home shortly.
Ferguson, who remains a devoted presence at United matches home and away, is no stranger to health scares. In May 2018, he survived a life-threatening brain haemorrhage that required emergency surgery, from which he made a full recovery. There is no indication Sunday’s incident bears any connection to that episode.
The legendary Scotsman has endured a difficult few years on a personal level. In 2023, he lost his wife of 57 years, Lady Cathy Ferguson, who passed away aged 84, a loss that resonated deeply throughout the Manchester United community.
His ties to the club have also shifted in recent times. Following Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s takeover and the arrival of INEOS, Ferguson’s ambassadorial contract was terminated as part of broader cost-cutting measures.
Nevertheless, his dedication to the club he transformed into a global dynasty has remained unwavering.
