President Bola Tinubu is set to address a joint session of the National Assembly on June 12 as the centerpiece of this year’s Democracy Day celebrations.
The announcement follows the inauguration of an Inter-Ministerial Committee on Tuesday, which was tasked by the Federal Government to oversee the 2026 Democracy Day events across Nigeria.
According to the approved schedule, the official lineup kicks off with a World Press Conference on June 4, followed by special Juma’at prayers on June 5, and an inter-denominational church service on June 7.
The commemoration continues with a Democracy Day public lecture on June 9, and dedicated youth and women-focused events on June 10. The celebrations will culminate on June 12 with a presidential broadcast alongside the National Assembly address, concluding with a Democracy Day Gala Night.
During the committee’s inauguration, the Federal Government honored the memory of the late Chief MKO Abiola and other prominent figures of the June 12 democratic struggle.
In a statement released by Yomi Odunuga, the media aide to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), the SGF, George Akume, emphasized that Democracy Day offers citizens a moment to reflect on the deep sacrifices made by those who championed democratic governance in Nigeria. Akume described the anniversary as a landmark occasion to respect those who contributed immensely to the country’s political evolution.

“The democratic values and institutions being strengthened across the country today are founded on the sacrifices and struggles of patriots and democrats who fought for the enthronement of democratic rule in Nigeria,” Akume stated.
The SGF offered a special tribute to the icons of the June 12, 1993 struggle, highlighting the late MKO Abiola’s unwavering commitment and sacrifice, which ultimately inspired the formal designation of June 12 as Nigeria’s official Democracy Day.
Akume further explained that the 2026 anniversary gives the Federal Government a platform to highlight its milestones and reaffirm its dedication to democratic principles, national development, and institutional progress. He noted that the Tinubu administration intends to use the events to showcase advancements in stabilizing democracy and rolling out vital reforms despite current socio-economic hurdles.
With just 10 days left until the anniversary, Akume mandated committee members to begin immediate preparations to guarantee a seamless rollout. However, he clarified that the events would remain “modest but purposeful,” reflecting the administration’s focus on financial prudence and the responsible management of public funds.
The SGF also revealed that the main committee has been split into dedicated sub-committees to manage various segments of the celebration, instructing all sub-committee secretaries to hand in their budgets for review. Expressing ultimate confidence in the team’s ability to host a successful event, Akume called on all relevant stakeholders to collaborate so the celebration can properly honor Nigeria’s democratic pioneers.
The central committee is led by the SGF and is composed of high-ranking ministers, security chiefs, and top government functionaries. Members include the Ministers of Information, Interior, Defence, Finance, and Foreign Affairs, along with the National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Nigeria officially observes Democracy Day every June 12 to honor its democratic progression and remember the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election. Widely acknowledged as the nation’s freest and fairest election, it was believed to have been won by the late MKO Abiola.
The annual holiday also marks Nigeria’s transition back to civilian rule in 1999, standing as a continuous tribute to the pro-democracy advocates, civil society networks, and political figures who fought to reclaim and preserve democracy.
