Tragedy in Cape Town as Nigerian citizen dies following alleged Police assault

A Nigerian national, Chika Ibe, has reportedly lost his life following an encounter with members of the South African Police Service during an operation at the Parksig Villas Complex in Bellville, Cape Town.

The incident was revealed by the Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa, which strongly denounced the alleged killing and demanded an immediate, independent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death.

According to the association, Ibe, who hailed from Lokpaukwu in Abia State, died on Thursday after being subjected to severe physical abuse, torture, inhuman treatment, and suffocation during the law enforcement operation.

Expressing deep concern, the president of the association, Rev. Frank Onyekwelu, noted that the allegations, if proven true, represent a grave breach of fundamental human rights and legal standards.

“These allegations are deeply disturbing and, if confirmed, constitute a gross violation of human rights and the rule of law,” Onyekwelu said.

The group called upon the Independent Police Investigative Directorate and the leadership of the South African Police Service to swiftly launch a transparent and comprehensive investigation into the matter.

Furthermore, the organization insisted that every officer involved should face the full weight of the law.

“Every officer found responsible must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. There can be no justification for torture, excessive force, or the unlawful taking of human life,” the association stated.

While extending condolences to the family of the deceased and the broader Nigerian population in South Africa, the group appealed to Nigerians across the country to maintain peace and order.

The organization cautioned against taking law into private hands, urging citizens to allow justice to proceed through proper legal avenues.

“While we share the grief and outrage of the Nigerian community, we urge all Nigerians across South Africa to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding.
“We strongly discourage any form of retaliation or unlawful conduct and encourage everyone to allow justice to take its course through the appropriate legal channels,” it added.

The association pledged to collaborate with Nigerian diplomatic missions in South Africa and the Federal Government of Nigeria to ensure the matter is pursued vigorously.
It stated it would track the investigation closely, demanding complete transparency, accountability, and the timely prosecution of anyone held responsible.
“We will closely monitor the investigation and insist on transparency, accountability, and timely prosecution of all those responsible,” NICASA said.

Attempts to reach official Nigerian government representatives for comment were unsuccessful at the time of reporting. Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, did not respond to phone calls.

This recent tragedy occurred less than a month after two other Nigerian citizens lost their lives in South Africa amid rising anti-migrant friction, events that prompted official condemnation and a parliamentary investigation in Nigeria.

On June 28, 2026, Emeka Charles Iroegbu reportedly died during an interrogation by Tshwane Metro Police officers in Sunnyside, Pretoria, while Musa Yunana Joe, popularly known as “Big Joe,” was fatally shot by unidentified gunmen outside his business in Witbank, Mpumalanga.

Nigerian authorities had previously noted that those same Tshwane Metro Police officers were earlier linked to the alleged extrajudicial death of another Nigerian, Nnaemeka Mathew Andrew Ekpenyong, on April 20, 2026.

This latest development is anticipated to intensify existing concerns regarding the safety of Nigerians residing in South Africa and renew calls for accountability in cases of alleged police brutality.
