President Bola Tinubu has asked a US court to stop the Department of Justice, FBI and DEA from releasing records tied to old drug trafficking allegations against him.
The records are sought by transparency activist Aaron Greenspan, who filed a FOIA lawsuit demanding the FBI’s full file on Tinubu, 1992–1993 interview records, and material linked to a 1993 civil forfeiture case involving roughly $460,000 connected to him.
In a 16-page filing shared with Channels Television, Tinubu’s lawyers argued release would violate his privacy, citing Supreme Court precedent that individuals retain a privacy interest in investigative files even when some related information has previously become public.
They said Greenspan’s broader push to challenge search efforts and exemptions ultimately serves one goal — obtaining documents bearing Tinubu’s name — and asked the court to uphold the FBI and DEA’s redactions.
Tinubu denies any wrongdoing.
