‎SPECIAL REPORT: ‘Killer Trucks’ on the Loose: How reckless Tipper drivers turn Abuja’s Apo-Waru-Wassa corridor into a death trap, by Maryam Sulaiman Abubakar

‎Dusted roads, deafening air horns, and crushed commuters, residents along the vital Federal Capital Territory route live in constant terror as heavy-duty haulers operate with total impunity.

‎On the Apo-Waru-Wassa corridor in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), daily travel has transformed into a high-stakes gamble with death. At the center of this escalating public safety crisis are heavy-duty tipper trucks (“tippas”).

‎ Laden with tons of granite, sharp sand, and construction spoil, these multi-axle monsters thunder through densely populated suburban communities at breakneck speeds, treating residential arterial roads like empty inter-state freeways.

‎High-Speed Menace at Busy Junctions

‎The defining danger along this axis is the drivers’ explicit refusal to slow down at major intersections. Where driver caution should naturally spike, specifically around pedestrian crossings, school zones, and transit points packed with commercial motorcycles (okadas) and tricycles (keke NAPEPs), tipper operators maintain highway speeds.

‎At critical bottlenecks near Waru Junction and the Wassa axis, drivers use momentum as a weapon, forcing smaller vehicles and pedestrians to scramble off the tarmac to avoid being flattened.

‎Road Intimidation and ‘Might Is Right’

‎Commuters report a systemic pattern of vehicular bullying designed to seize absolute dominance of the road: Tipper drivers enforce an unwritten rule that sheer vehicle mass grants absolute right-of-way, ignoring traffic laws and right-of-way rules.

‎Rather than braking when approaching oncoming traffic or vehicles executing lawful turns, drivers blast industrial air horns to panic other road users into yielding. Sweeping across lanes without signaling or checking blind spots forces cars into unpaved, erosion-gullied shoulders, causing frequent rollover crashes.

‎The Human Cost

‎The stretch extending beyond Waru toward the Wassa resettlement axis is now a notorious blackspot. Commercial tricycles and motorcyclists, offering zero structural protection to passengers, bear the brunt of these collisions. What should be routine commutes for traders, civil servants, and school children frequently end in fatal, avoidable disasters.

‎Institutional Breakdown: Who Holds Responsibility?

‎The ongoing lawlessness along the Apo-Waru-Wassa corridor stems from a total breakdown of regulatory enforcement across three key agencies: FCT Directorate of Road Traffic Services (VIO): Responsible for vehicle inspection, speed enforcement, and impounding unroadworthy commercial haulers within the FCT.

‎Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC): Mandated to curb reckless driving, enforce speed limits, and manage highway safety across major FCT corridors.

‎FCT Police Command: Responsible for arresting drivers committing dangerous driving offences and manslaughter under the Criminal Code.

‎Substantive Tipper Drivers Unions (NURTW / RTEAN Tipper Branches): Union leadership fails to enforce internal discipline, speed governors, or sobriety checks on their operators.

‎It is time for these agencies to live up to their responsibilities including the provision of hotlines so that they can be contacted as the need arises.
