South Africa Reels as Ninth Body Found in Two-Month Killing Spree Near Johannesburg

South African authorities are grappling with a wave of public alarm after discovering the body of a ninth woman in two months in the Ekurhuleni area east of Johannesburg, deepening fears that a serial killer or group of attackers is targeting women in the region.

The latest victim was found partially unclothed and showing signs of severe physical trauma, matching a pattern seen in the previous eight cases. Her body was discovered along a roadside, where forensic teams in protective gear worked the scene as local residents gathered nearby to watch investigators at work.

In response to the growing crisis, police have placed Kempton Park under lockdown and set up roadblocks throughout the area, a measure intensified after three victims were recovered within the same week.

Deputy police chief Tebello Mosikili addressed reporters at the scene, expressing frustration at the mounting toll and stressing that the pattern of discoveries cannot go on.The killings have unsettled communities across the municipality and reignited scrutiny of South Africa’s long-standing struggle with violence against women.

The country continues to report one of the highest homicide rates in the world, and UN data shows roughly one in three South African women will experience physical or sexual violence in her lifetime — a statistic that persists despite repeated government commitments to address gender-based violence.
