DRC opposition condemns politician death during protests against proposed constitutional changes

Leaders from the C64 opposition platform in the Democratic Republic of Congo have firmly condemned the death of Manassé Lomboto Bomegola, a senior figure in the ADD-Congo party who died during anti-government demonstrations on September 15. Although local authorities initially authorized the march in Kinshasa, security forces eventually dispersed the crowds using tear gas after violent clashes erupted.

At a press conference on September 17, Dieudonné Bolengetenge, secretary-general of the Ensemble pour la République party, placed direct blame on security forces, the national army, and members of the ruling UDPS party’s Force du Progrès militia for the death. Bolengetenge asserted that the administration of President Félix Tshisekedi bears both political and criminal responsibility, alleging that political opponents were targeted and led into a planned trap despite prior safety assurances from city officials.

“The C64 challenges the political and criminal responsibility of Mr Tshisekedi and his regime in the planning of the elimination of opponents because of their views,” he said.

The widespread demonstrations stem from opposition to potential constitutional modifications that could allow President Tshisekedi to seek a third term. The C64 coalition has rejected calls for a national dialogue, framing it as an attempt to extend power, and demands a constitutional transfer of authority in 2028.

Protests were not limited to the capital, as opposition supporters mobilized in several other provinces despite official bans:

  • Lubumbashi: Security forces fired tear gas and warning shots to scatter activists in the city center. Mohamed Eyenga, provincial coordinator of the Envol party, voiced frustration over the crackdown, stating, “We were taken aback by the large deployment of the army and police to prevent this peaceful demonstration. Many of our activists were unfortunately and arbitrarily arrested.” However, provincial police commander General Blaise Kilimbalimba disputed the account, stating no peaceful demonstrators were detained and confirming that the area remained calm.Mbandaka: Armed law enforcement officers dispersed roughly 100 demonstrators, leading to the arrest of about 10 people.
  • Eastern Regions: Security forces broke up smaller rallies and carried out arrests in South Kivu and Tanganyika provinces.
