An estimated 33.5 million people across Nigeria, including internally displaced persons in 26 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), are projected to face a food and nutrition crisis, or worse, between June and August 2027.
The figures are in the latest Cadre Harmonisé (CH) report, released yesterday in Abuja. It also says 26.8 million people in the same areas are in crisis from October to December 2026.
The federal government produced the report through the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), participating states and donor agencies.
It names conflict and insecurity, high fuel prices, climate shocks and high food inflation as the main drivers. “Timely food assistance, targeted cash transfers and livelihood support will be essential to limit further deterioration,” it states.
Speaking in Abuja, FAO Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Dr Hussein Gadain, said the CH is a government-led process, which is fundamental to its credibility. He was represented by Mr Jimmy Owani, Senior Programme Officer in the Office of Emergency and Resilience.
