Widespread fuel shortages are expanding throughout Niger, hitting the capital city of Niamey particularly hard as motorists endure ever-growing lines at local service stations.
Local residents report that the scarcity of gasoline is severely impacting routine activities, making basic commuting and traveling to work a major challenge. Many drivers explain that they have spent days hunting for fuel, even as official statements suggest the supply crisis has been resolved.
Harouna Chérif, Niamey resident: “The problem is the fuel. For a week now we’ve been struggling, we can’t even find fuel to get to work. There’s always problems, we don’t even understand what kind of problems they are. So normally the government should look into how to sort things out.”
The ongoing supply breakdown has heightened public discontent, prompting citizens to demand swift intervention from political leaders.
Abdoulaye Zakari, Niamey resident: “We’ve been looking for fuel for quite some time now, but things are not going well. We’ve been told the shortage is over, yet we still don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. We call on our leaders to look at our situation.”
The underlying factors causing the shortage and the expected timeline for restoring full distribution remain uncertain, leaving local drivers in doubt over when normal refueling operations will resume.
