Harry Kane scored twice in the final 15 minutes to save England from a shock World Cup exit, as Thomas Tuchel’s side came from behind to beat Democratic Republic of Congo 2-1 in Atlanta and reach the last 16.
Brian Cipenga’s early strike had given the World Cup debutants a stunning lead, but Kane’s brace ensured England avoided one of their worst-ever tournament results. The Three Lions, still chasing their first major trophy in 60 years, now face co-hosts Mexico at the Estadio Azteca on Sunday.
Kane’s goals took him to 13 World Cup goals overall — extending his record as England’s all-time top scorer in the competition — and five for this tournament, keeping him in contention for the Golden Boot.
Tuchel made two changes from the win over Panama, bringing in Declan Rice and Djed Spence, with Reece James and Jarell Quansah both sidelined through injury. Congo exploited the right-back area early, as Spence was beaten by Chancel Mbemba’s cross, allowing Cipenga to fire past Jordan Pickford at his near post.
England pushed for an equaliser through Jude Bellingham headers and a Marcus Rashford effort cleared off the line by Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi produced several key saves to keep his side ahead into the second half.
Tuchel turned to his bench, introducing Bukayo Saka, Anthony Gordon and Eberechi Eze in search of a breakthrough. Gordon’s cross set up Kane’s headed equaliser 15 minutes from time, before the pair combined again for the winner, with Kane driving home his 84th international goal in the 86th minute.
Defeat ended a historic run for Congo, who were competing at the World Cup for the first time in 52 years and had never previously won a point or scored a goal at the tournament.
