Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed for New Delhi, India, to stand in for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 18th BRICS Leaders Summit, where Nigeria aims to strengthen economic ties and deepen diplomatic partnerships.
The gathering takes place this weekend at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, assembling heads of state and representatives from BRICS member and partner nations to address global economic growth, multilateral collaboration, and common development goals.
Nigeria intends to utilize the forum to promote its strategic economic and diplomatic priorities, according to a statement released Friday by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President.
The Presidency stated that Nigeria will focus on solidifying bilateral relations, broadening economic collaboration, and driving trade and investment in key sectors including energy, agriculture, solid minerals, technology, and innovation. The meeting also offers another venue to champion stronger cooperation among Global South nations.
Hosted under India’s 2026 BRICS Chairship, the summit is centered on the theme, “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” Agenda items span political and security alignment, economic and financial alliances, and cultural exchanges.
During his time in New Delhi, Shettima will attend plenary and high-level meetings with leaders of BRICS member and partner states. He is also scheduled to hold bilateral talks with foreign leaders and officials to explore opportunities for closer trade and diplomatic links.
Nigeria achieved BRICS partner country status in January 2025, opening an additional avenue to boost South-South cooperation and engage major emerging economies on trade, investment, development finance, and global governance reform.
The Presidency noted that attending the summit reflects President Tinubu’s ongoing effort to expand international economic partnerships, draw foreign direct investment, and unlock new markets for Nigerian exports. Non-oil sectors such as agriculture, energy, and solid minerals will receive special emphasis in line with the government’s economic diversification goals.
This year’s event coincides with the 20th anniversary of BRICS as the bloc works to enhance practical cooperation across its expanding network of member and partner countries. Shettima is slated to return to Nigeria upon concluding his summit engagements.
