Normalcy restored in Niamey following aborted military mutiny

Life in Niamey returned to normal on Sunday, just one day after Niger’s military regime successfully suppressed a soldier-led mutiny.

The brief unrest began in the early hours of Saturday, marked by intense gunfire as mutineers attempted to storm the presidential palace. The clashes resulted in several casualties among the forces trying to breach the compound, while dozens of other soldiers involved in the plot were subsequently taken into custody. Reports indicate the rebellious troops were protesting the government’s ongoing inability to stem militant violence across the country.

Saturday’s violence marks the third major clash in the capital this year, though the prior two security incidents involved jihadist forces targeting a strategic military base located within the city’s airport.

Reflecting on the situation, Niamey resident Hassane Assoumane shared his perspective on the underlying issues.

“As soon as there’s a mutiny, it means that things aren’t going well,” Assoumane said on Sunday. “It means that perhaps the soldiers have something to demand, and now it’s up to the current authorities to find a solution: whether they try to come to an agreement with the mutineers or whether they opt for another course of action, it’s for them to decide.”

Niger’s current leader, General Abdourahmane Tiani, assumed power following a coup three years ago on a platform centered on restoring national security. Despite those pledges, the administration continues to face significant challenges in containing deadly insurgencies launched by groups linked to Al-Qaeda and Islamic State.

Since taking control, Tiani has severed long-standing diplomatic and military ties with France, Niger’s former colonial power, while building security partnerships with alternative foreign allies, including Russia, Turkey, and Iran. Russian paramilitary forces from the Africa Corps reportedly assisted the regime in putting down Saturday’s mutiny attempt.
