African football has achieved its strongest-ever showing at a FIFA World Cup, with a record nine nations advancing to the Round of 32 at the 2026 tournament.
South Africa, Morocco, Egypt, Ghana, Algeria, Senegal, DR Congo, Ivory Coast and Cape Verde all secured knockout-stage qualification following strong group-stage campaigns, marking the continent’s most successful representation in the competition’s history.
The expanded 48-team format created more qualification slots, but African sides have gone beyond simply filling numbers, delivering disciplined performances and notable upsets throughout the group stage.

Morocco continued their strong recent form, following their historic semi-final run at the 2022 World Cup with an unbeaten group campaign. Senegal and Egypt maintained their standing as some of Africa’s most consistent performers, while South Africa’s qualification has drawn renewed excitement at home.
Cape Verde emerged as one of the tournament’s standout stories, reaching the knockout stage for the first time in its history. Ghana, Algeria, DR Congo and Ivory Coast also advanced after resilient displays against strong opposition.

In the Round of 32, South Africa will face Canada, Morocco take on the Netherlands, and Senegal meet Belgium. Egypt will play Australia, while Ghana face Colombia. Algeria will square off against Switzerland, DR Congo take on England, and Ivory Coast meet Norway. Cape Verde face the toughest test of all against defending champions Argentina.

The qualification of nine African nations reflects sustained investment in youth development, stronger domestic football structures, and the growing presence of African players in Europe’s top leagues.
