British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is reportedly poised to announce his resignation on Monday, just days after Labour rival Andy Burnham won a closely watched by-election and is due to be sworn in as an MP.
Under Labour Party rules, the leader must hold a seat in Parliament — a requirement Burnham, the Greater Manchester mayor since 2017, has now met following his victory in the Makerfield constituency vote last week.
The Guardian reported that Starmer is expected to step down “after overwhelming pressure from Labour MPs to make way for” Burnham, with similar accounts carried by the BBC, the Sunday Times, the Sunday Telegraph and the Sun on Sunday.
US President Donald Trump weighed in on social media Sunday, predicting Starmer’s resignation and citing failures on immigration and energy policy, though he added, “I wish him well.”Burnham, 56, has signalled his intention to seek the Labour leadership, telling supporters after his win that the party had a “final chance to change.”
Given Labour’s large parliamentary majority, he could become prime minister without a contested challenge if no rival emerges.Should Starmer, 63, depart this year, the UK would have its seventh prime minister in a decade.
