Nigeria’s Super Eagles opened their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
The hosts fell behind in the 16th minute when Emmanuel Kari converted an early chance to silence the home crowd. Nigeria responded strongly and drew level in first-half stoppage time, with Gift Ilenikhena scoring in the 46th minute off an assist from Alex Iwobi.
The Eagles continued to press after the break and completed the turnaround in the 65th minute through Moses Usor, assisted by Semi Ajayi. Madagascar struggled to create further openings as Nigeria controlled the remainder of the match to secure all three points.
Nigeria dominated the statistics, with 54.7 per cent possession, 22 shots to Madagascar’s four, and four shots on target compared to the visitors’ one. The Eagles also had 35 touches inside the Madagascar penalty area to the visitors’ six.
The win gives Nigeria three points from their opening Group L fixture as they begin their pursuit of a place at the 2027 AFCON.
