Nigeria’s military is in mourning.Retired Major General Abubakar Rabe, a former Director of Defence Information and decorated military officer, has died in the hands of his abductors — exactly two weeks after he was seized alongside his wife and driver on a Katsina highway on May 30. The Katsina State Government said he died from complications of diabetes and hypertension while in captivity.

The Defence Headquarters, which had stayed silent on the abduction to protect rescue efforts, broke its silence on Saturday, describing Rabe as an officer who served Nigeria with distinction across multiple postings, including as spokesman for the Armed Forces of Nigeria. “Every operational resource was deployed in the hope of securing his safe return,” the military said — but it was not enough.

The AFN has vowed to intensify operations against those responsible and dismantle every terrorist network threatening the country.A general who survived the battlefield did not survive the roadside. Nigeria is poorer for his loss.
