Tragedy in Accra: Fatal flash floods submerge Ghana’s capital

A devastating wave of torrential rainfall has triggered severe flooding throughout Ghana’s capital city of Accra, leaving at least three people dead.

Emergency response teams deployed boats to navigate the rising waters and rescue stranded residents, successfully pulling an infant and at least 15 children from submerged homes, vehicles, and roadways.

Local authorities confirmed the casualties, stating that one man tragically drowned in the Alajo district.

In a separate incident, two other individuals lost their lives to electrocution after rising floodwaters breached their home and made contact with exposed electrical wiring.

In response to the crisis, the government has advised citizens to restrict unnecessary travel.

Meanwhile, a coordinated rescue effort involving the military, police, and firefighters remains underway across affected neighborhoods.

Meteorologists have issued warnings that more heavy downpours are expected in the coming days.

The forecast raises serious concerns of escalated flooding in Accra, a city where rapid urbanization combined with inadequate drainage infrastructure has caused seasonal rains to become increasingly destructive.
