NIS Unveils Step-By-Step Guide For Contactless Passport Renewal By Diasporans

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has released an updated guide enabling Nigerians living abroad to renew their passports without visiting a diplomatic mission for biometric capture.

In the revised guide published on X on Tuesday, the Service urged diasporans to make use of its Contactless Passport Application System to complete the renewal process remotely.

Under the process, applicants are required to visit the official NIS Passport Application portal, select the renewal option, verify their identity with their National Identification Number, complete the form, choose a processing embassy, upload documents, and pay the passport fee to obtain an Application ID and Reference Number.

They must then select the Contactless option, opt in, download the NIS Mobile App, and complete facial and fingerprint capture along with a liveness verification before paying the contactless enrolment fee and submitting their biometric details.

NIS clarified that not all applicants qualify for the remote option. Those found ineligible after verification are required to return to the portal to book a physical appointment at their chosen embassy or high commission.

Even successful contactless applicants must forward supporting documents — including their printed application form, payment receipts, and current passport — in a self-addressed envelope to the selected mission.

Applicants can begin tracking their applications two weeks after submission via the NIS online platform or mobile app.
