Ebola Defense at the Border: South Sudan intensifies screening along unchecked routes

Authorities in South Sudan are ramping up Ebola monitoring strategies along the nation’s boundary with the Democratic Republic of Congo, where high volumes of border traffic and informal crossing paths present significant containment hurdles. Local officials and United Nations representatives emphasize that early preparation and tight coordination are essential to keeping the virus out of the country.

A senior United Nations delegation recently traveled to Western Equatoria State to review Ebola readiness protocols and reinforce joint efforts with local authorities concerning public health, relief distribution, and peace initiatives.

At the Nabiapai border post connecting to the Democratic Republic of Congo, frontline medical staff report daily foot traffic in the hundreds, with numbers spiking dramatically on designated market days.

We screen more than 800 to 1,000 people at this border, explained frontline health worker Severio Peter. He noted that between Monday and Thursday, health teams evaluate anywhere from 200 to 500 travelers every day.

The primary obstacle, he added, remains the region’s porous entries, which make it easy for individuals to bypass designated health checkpoints entirely.

No confirmed cases of Ebola have been reported inside South Sudan, but officials are taking proactive measures due to concerns over cross-border transmission.

Western Equatoria Governor Badagbu Rimbasa confirmed that outbreak preparation was a central topic during the meeting with the visiting UN officials.

Ebola is not yet in South Sudan, but we must do everything in our preparedness to prevent Ebola from entering South Sudan, he stated.

State Health Minister Nama Bukulu urged partners to expand monitoring measures, specifically requesting overnight shifts at critical crossing points to evaluate travelers who arrive past regular operational hours.

UN Deputy Special Representative Ramanathan Balakrishnan indicated that discussions centered on strengthening operational ties between the government and UN entities, with a focus on ensuring safety for humanitarian personnel and maintaining access to vulnerable populations.

We also talked about the Ebola preparedness and the support that would be expected from the state authorities, he noted.

Balakrishnan observed that while local readiness has improved, additional measures are required. He expressed optimism that ongoing cooperation among national authorities, state leadership, UN agencies, and regional partners will enhance South Sudan’s capacity to respond rapidly if the virus is identified.

The field visit underscored the critical need for constant vigilance along one of the nation’s busiest frontiers, where continuous population movement and unmonitored entry points complicate public health surveillance.
