Federal Government moves next-generation satellites into acquisition and deployment phase to boost broadband, broadcasting and critical communications

The Federal Government has advanced the acquisition and deployment of NigComSat-2A and NigComSat-2B into the next phase, in a bid to expand Nigeria’s satellite capacity and strengthen broadband, broadcasting, enterprise and critical communications services.

The initiative forms part of broader investment in digital infrastructure and national connectivity under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. It is expected to extend connectivity to underserved, unserved and hard-to-reach communities, strengthen national communications resilience, and increase Nigeria’s ability to deliver satellite-enabled services.

In a statement signed by Stephen Kwande, Acting Head of the Corporate Affairs Division of the Nigeria Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT), Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Jane Egerton-Idehen described the development as a significant milestone.

“This is a significant milestone for NIGCOMSAT and for Nigeria, and we commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the leadership and support that have enabled us to reach this stage,” she said.

“NIGCOMSAT-2A and NIGCOMSAT-2B will strengthen our national satellite capacity, expand connectivity and support critical communications across the country. Our priority is to translate this investment into measurable value for Nigerians and position NIGCOMSAT for stronger impact within the global satellite and digital economy.”

The additional capacity will support high-capacity broadband, broadcasting, enterprise connectivity, government services and emerging digital applications. It is also designed to complement terrestrial broadband networks by providing wider coverage in locations where conventional infrastructure is difficult or costly to deploy.

Officials say the deployment of the two satellites will enable more reliable connectivity, particularly for communities that currently lack adequate access.
