Binance has begun restoring customer withdrawals after hackers stole about $6.3bn in cryptocurrency, a record theft that US authorities have blamed on North Korea.

The world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange resumed some services on Sunday. It had suspended them after Thursday’s attack while it investigated the breach and carried out security checks.

Binance said it had replaced about 95 percent of the affected assets. “Binance will absorb the financial impact of the stolen funds, not our users,” it said in a statement on X.

Withdrawals are being restored in stages. Major cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ether are being reopened, along with some stablecoin services. The exchange warned that high demand could cause delays and advised customers whose transactions fail to try again after a short wait. More services will reopen as security checks are completed, while its teams continue working with law enforcement and industry partners to trace and recover the stolen assets.

The FBI said on Saturday that North Korea was responsible, identifying the operation as cyber-activity it tracks as TraderTraitor. It said the attackers were converting the stolen assets mainly into ether, and warned that further laundering was expected through decentralised finance platforms and instant exchange services
