Sudan takes Ethiopia to UN Security Council, AU over drone attacks

Khartoum accuses RSF of launching strikes on civilian sites and power stations from Ethiopian soil

Sudan has lodged a complaint against Ethiopia with the United Nations Security Council and the African Union Peace and Security Council over a series of deadly drone attacks this year.

In a statement late on Sunday, Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of using Ethiopian territory to launch “brazen aggression” against civilian sites and power stations. It said the attacks caused hundreds of casualties and disrupted essential services. The ministry added that the incidents “place Ethiopia before international law”.

The statement came with a report from the army-led Transitional Sovereignty Council. The report alleged 70 attacks involving 187 one-way attack drones between February 15 and October 27. It said the strikes killed or wounded 484 civilians and killed 176 soldiers, with another 200 soldiers wounded.

“Since February 2026, armed drones have taken off from Ethiopian soil … to strike Sudanese cities and civilians,” the report said. It named three launch sites: Asosa Airport in western Ethiopia, the Kurmuk-Gizen border area, and Bahir Dar airbase in the Amhara region. It added that October alone saw 28 attacks by 97 drones.

Sudan’s military has repeatedly accused Ethiopia of aiding the RSF, which it has fought in a civil war since April 2023. Ethiopia has accused the Sudanese army of backing rebels linked to the Tigray People’s Liberation Front. Khartoum denies this.
