Nigerian superstar Burna Boy and Colombian icon Shakira performed at FIFA’s inaugural World Cup final halftime show on Sunday, entertaining millions of fans as Spain defeated Argentina to win the 2026 title.
The pair performed the tournament’s official anthem, “Dai, Dai,” at the New York New Jersey Stadium during the interval, marking FIFA’s first attempt at a Super Bowl-style halftime show in World Cup history.
Madonna opened the entertainment segment, while Justin Bieber performed an acoustic rendition of “Everything Hallelujah.” Brazilian football legends Ronaldo and Ronaldinho also drove onto the pitch to loud applause, having remained prominent tournament figures despite Brazil’s Round of 16 exit.
Curated by Coldplay’s Chris Martin, the show ran 27 minutes and 19 seconds — well beyond the traditional 15-minute halftime interval. The extended format was part of FIFA’s fan engagement push for the expanded 48-team tournament.
Reaction was mixed. Former Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo backed the concept but said entertainment must not eat into match time. Ian Wright joked about Ronaldinho’s tracksuit size, while Roy Keane called the show underwhelming despite praising Shakira’s appearance.
