Chelsea have appointed Xabi Alonso as their new men’s head coach, the Premier League club confirmed on Sunday, with the Spaniard signing a four-year contract ahead of taking charge on July 1, 2026.
Alonso joins Stamford Bridge following a landmark stint at Bayer Leverkusen, where he led the German club to their first-ever Bundesliga title and cemented his reputation as one of Europe’s most sought-after coaches.
In a statement, Chelsea said the appointment reflects confidence in Alonso’s tactical philosophy, leadership qualities and professional integrity, describing him as not only an elite coach but a proven leader whose approach aligns with the club’s long-term sporting structure and objectives.
The 44-year-old said he was energised by the ambition he encountered in discussions with Chelsea’s ownership and sporting leadership, expressing confidence that both parties share a common vision.
“Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football, and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club,” Alonso said.
“From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.
“He added that he was eager to get to work, pointing to the talent already within the squad as a foundation for what he hopes to build.
“There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club, and it will be my great honour to lead it. Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies,” he said.
Chelsea said they look forward to a new era under Alonso’s leadership, reiterating that winning trophies remains central to the club’s identity and ambitions.
