A Chinese medical vessel carrying 376 crew members docked at the port of Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire on Thursday, launching an initiative to deliver free health checkups and medications to local residents.
Patient Kassoum Azoumana shared his experience after visiting the facility, stating that he heard about the arrival of a Chinese medical consultation ship, “so I took the opportunity to come in for some checkups. I have to admit I was impressed by the warm welcome and above all, the quality of the equipment”.
The medical consultations are scheduled to run through October 21, 2026. Long recognized for its economic and trade influence across Africa—particularly in the Gulf of Guinea—China is expanding its footprint into humanitarian aid, entering a space historically led by Western nations.
Vice Admiral Célestin N’guessan Kouame, Chief of Staff of the Ivorian Navy, provided context on the mission’s significance: “The initiative being carried out here is part of what is known as naval diplomacy—primarily aimed at raising awareness of the Chinese navy among African populations, especially in the Gulf of Guinea. It’s not just military ships that can dock here. There are ships that can dock here that bring joy to people’s hearts and a little bit of health.”
Ivorian officials also noted that in addition to offering direct patient care, the mission creates an opportunity for professional exchanges and collaborative learning between the Chinese and Ivorian navies.
