Deadly strikes hit Kyiv suburbs as Air Defence shortages expose capital to Russian missiles

A child was among three people killed during Russian strikes in the region surrounding Kyiv on Saturday, a Ukrainian official reported, as explosions shook the capital and blazes ignited across several neighbourhoods.

Tymur Tkachenko, head of the regional administration, confirmed that the strikes hit three separate locations in the Boryspil district just outside Kyiv, leaving three additional people injured.

The latest wave of bombardment highlights the growing strain on Ukraine’s air defence network, which has struggled to stop incoming threats and revealed an expanding gap between Russia’s offensive capabilities and Kyiv’s ability to protect its skies.

Air raid sirens sounded early Saturday morning, followed by fires breaking out in two capital districts. Residents in central Kyiv reported strong explosions that shook nearby structures.

Russian ballistic missiles fly at hypersonic speeds and dive sharply toward targets, leaving Ukrainian air defense crews with mere seconds to respond. US-supplied Patriot systems are currently the only assets in Ukraine’s inventory capable of consistently intercepting these weapons, but officials in Kyiv emphasize they suffer from a severe shortage of both batteries and interceptor missiles.

Earlier this week, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that Ukraine obtained only a third of the air-defence missiles during the first half of this year compared to the same period in 2025. He connected the reduction to the US-Israel conflict with Iran, which has placed significant pressure on global interceptor inventories.

Ukrainian government analysts estimate that Russia maintains the production capacity to launch roughly 100 ballistic missiles per month, with officials cautioning that Moscow plans to escalate strikes as winter approaches.

The assault follows a series of long-range Ukrainian strikes deep inside Russian territory, including drone attacks on two oil refineries over the previous 24 hours and a strike targeting a warehouse owned by the e-commerce firm Wildberries in Ekaterinburg. Ukrainian officials frame these operations against Wildberries facilities as part of a targeted effort against logistical networks supporting the Russian armed forces.

In a separate incident on Friday, the governor of Russian-occupied Crimea stated that a Ukrainian drone struck an apartment building, killing two residents.

Meanwhile, the US Senate approved a major sanctions package on Friday aimed at curbing Russian energy revenues, introducing 100 percent tariffs on nations continuing to import Russian oil and gas.

Passed by an 86-11 margin, the legislation was named in honor of the late US Senator Lindsey Graham, a long-serving proponent of strict measures against Moscow. The measure must now pass the House of Representatives and receive approval from President Donald Trump to become law.

Zelenskyy praised the Senate vote, while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated the sanctions would help “drain Russia’s means to continue a war it cannot win.”
