Alhassan Jamil, a 13-year-old Junior Secondary School student of Ihyau El-Burhan Academy, Phase 3, Gwagwalada Area Council, was on Wednesday swept away by floodwater while being taken to school by his father.
The boy’s father, Jamil Maikasuwa, Special Assistant to the Gwagwalada Area Council Chairman on Domestic Affairs, said the incident occurred while he was conveying his son on a motorcycle to school. He said the boy, seated at the back of the motorcycle, fell into rising floodwater while they were crossing a double-cell culvert near their Old Kutunku residence.
Maikasuwa said he applied the brakes on noticing the fast-approaching floodwater, but his son jumped off the bike out of fear and was swept away before he could reach him.
He said the boy’s body has not been recovered, though some residents living close to the riverbank reported sighting it floating with his school bag still strapped to his back.
Fishermen and divers have been mobilised to search for the corpse.
