Fuel shortages in Port Sudan have forced Sudan’s Transport Chambers Union to raise intercity bus fares by 40% and minibus fares by 30% this month.
Petrol now costs 35,000 Sudanese pounds ($3.80) a gallon in Port Sudan and 40,000 pounds ($4.30) in Gazira State. Minibus driver Azhari Mohamed, 60, says he spends one of every three days queuing for fuel, sometimes for more than five hours. He is left with about 50,000 pounds ($5.40) a day after costs.
Cleaner Aziza Ibrahim, 38, has cut her work days to three a week because fares on some routes have risen from 700 pounds to 2,500 ($0.27).
